A history of a major Canadian Catholic college from its beginnings in 1852 to 2005. The first full history in more than 40 years, it covers the evolution of St. Michael’s from a petit seminaire, through its federation with the University of Toronto as a liberal arts college to its establishment as a degree-granting univeristy in 1959 and subsequent development. In its preparation, Monahan had access to relevant archives as well as printed material covering the entire period. Organized chronically, the history covers relations with the Basilian Fathers, who established the college and whose members until recently governed, administered and taught there, the Ontario and Canadian governments, the University of Toronto, college academic programming, finances, internal governance, student life and athletics.
