Autism and Kindergarten


Tom gives his account of kindergarten with autism. Tom was not diagnosed but would later become diagnosed giving him many answers into why he was the way he was. Kindergarten was challenging for Tom because he had difficulty with fine motor skills and socializing with other kids. Tom's parents decided to delay his start ot kindergarten by one year. This year helped Tom catch up to his peer group.

Tom had a good friend named Nick whom he met in middle school. Nick and Tom did everything together including ride the bus. Tom really struggled with art projects or anything that required using crayons, scissors, and glue. Tom was not very coordinated and this would cause him trouble all throughout school.

Kindergarten was a big step up from preschool for Tom because he now had to adjust to going a full day of school instead of just being at school for three hours. People with autism often struggle with change and this was true for Tom even at an early age.
