American graduate student, Isabel Palmer, discovers both legend and love as she researches her Venezuelan ancestry.
Isabel moves to her mother’s native country of Venezuela to study for her Masters degree in South American cultural studies at Central University in Caracas. Her grandmother, Magdelena Montez, presents her with a priceless piece of family history, the journal of sixteenth century Spanish sailor, Rodrigo Velasquez.
With the help of her boyfriend, Raúl Guerrero, Isabel hires a Venezuelan archeologist to help her unravel the mysteries in the journal. Manuel Santiago, Professor of Archeology, shares Isabel’s passion for Venezuelan history and faith in God. The two bond as they work to piece together the details of Rodrigo’s days on Cubagua. Journal entries reveal that Rodrigo, disgruntled with the Spaniards’ inhumane treatment of native Indians, made the difficult decision to abandon the Spanish Navy. The night of his defection, he left with an Indian maiden and a chest of pearls stolen from the Spanish fleet, and the Velasquez legend was born.
Tracing a path to the hidden pearls takes Isabel and her companions from the Pearl Coast to the Andes Mountains and the rain forest deep in the heart of Venezuela. Raúl becomes impatient to find the treasure and arouses Isabel’s suspicions with accusations that Manuel is intentionally delaying the discovery. When mysterious accidents occur in the camp and valuable equipment is stolen, Isabel is unsure whom to trust.
Leaning on her faith in God, she makes some valuable discoveries on her journey.
