Review Dr. Wilder has captured the wounded spirit of Naomi as she transforms from a woman gravely disheartened by her circumstances to overcome and see hope on the other side. In the Naomi story we see a thoughtful person as she releases her daughters-in-law from their vow to remain with her. Using this theme Dr. Wilder is able to search the heart of bitterness and relate it to her personal experiences as well as the subject of domestic violence and the human condition. The sensitivity with which she describes and expands on the grieving process as it relates to bitterness gives us insight into resilience. The relationship of Ruth and Boaz promises the glimmer of hope. It also illumines the possibilities of a better place in our thinking of not survival alone, but conquering. As she says, we don’t have to stay in bitterness, there is another side to it. Helen Postell Spence, MED Counselor, Retired Teacher, Consultant and Business Owner.
