December 14 , 2009

Plato has been immortalized as a father of philosophy, standing along Socrates as one of the earliest and most important contributors to Western thought. “Euthyphro,” a dialogue divided into five definitions and a response, is among the earlier of Plato’s works. Dated as early as 399 BC, the work features the attempts of fellow philosopher Socrates and religious scholar Euthyphro to define the concepts of piety and holiness. Through this dialogue Plato would ultimately influence theology, ethics, and epistemology, and metaphysics.
