The novel tells the story of a cluster of pecans growing and coming of age on the branch of a tree while watching and learning the mannerism of the people that rest under the tree. Soon three homeless come to live in the folds of the tree. The pecans are hoping to be picked up by someone for Thanksgiving or Christmas food. They struggle to stay as they change from being a cluster to a family. By the end of the story, the children have a new home and a new family, and the pecan families, by their own choice, become members of a wider human society.
