A rich socialite disappears from her coffin, the corpse of an indigent woman disappears before the police can get there to pick it up, and fresh graves are turning up empty. It’s up to Buck, Detective Tristan Buckley, the scion of a blue-blooded old-money family, and his never-a-hair-out of place partner Ron, to get to the bottom of the mystery. But they don’t have much to go on and what’s more, somebody in the police department seems to be trying to stymy their efforts.
In Tess Klein’s first chilling new thriller since Lucifer’s List, the question isn’t only who is taking the bodies, the question is why. But as Buck and Ron conduct their investigation, things get complicated. Bachelor Buck finds himself irresistibly drawn to a beautiful doctor whose physician partner may be hurrying patients to their graves and stealing the bodies. His patrician father, with whom he hasn’t spoken in years, appears to have uncomfortable associations with some of the suspects in the case…and somebody tries to poison Buck’s beloved pet, a former K-9 dog with cadaver-seeking talents.
Operating outside of official channels and using Buck’s inherited mansion as a headquarters, the detectives are led on an eerie, roller coaster ride of an investigation, through funeral homes, cemeteries and ultimately to a real-life house of horrors where all the questions are finally answered.
Tess Klein’s smart new thriller presents an unforgettable cast of characters in a high-powered, unnervingly eerie plot that grabs you at page one and doesn’t let go.
