Los Angeles, 1960. A corrupt union official is threatening to talk about Vice President Nixon's finances unless ad-man Jack Mercer can pay him off, and in trying to beat that blackmail, Mercer stumbles across even more serious problems for the candidate and his men. While his colleague Henry Bell, a professional fixer for the Rockefeller organization, gets stuck with trying to sell thermonuclear warfare to the housewives of America, thanks to his company's newest contract with the United States Air Force.
From Wilshire Boulevard to the beaches of Oahu, and from Canoga Park to the shores of Lake Michigan, GATE CITY follows these men through that summer's political conventions and into the fall campaign. Nothing less than "the delta velocity of history" becomes its main concern, according to a friend of Bell's who works for the RAND Corporation; either that, or it's about "atoning for your sins," per Bell's next-door neighbor in Woodland Hills, commenting on the Jewish prayer book that Bell's wife has started to read on her own.
Join all these characters on a journey into the dark heart of American politics. GATE CITY: when you run out of options, all that's left is the truth.
