“Hey, Josh! Party this Friday for Brian's birthday. You coming?” Shane asked me one day.
“Nope. I can't. I'm going home that night. It's my mom's birthday,” I said. It was a bad lie but I couldn't think of a better excuse on the spot.
“Aw. That sucks. I mean, it sucks that you can't come, not that your mom is having a birthday.”
I laughed. “I know what you meant, dumbass. Have a beer for me.”
“No problem! Tell your mom 'happy birthday' for me!”
Shane must've left for the party right after his last class ended because I didn't see him for the rest of the evening. Not until he swaggered into our room at 3AM, reeking of cigarette smoke and booze. The smell woke me up a little and in the dim light, I could just make out Shane undressing. I closed my eyes and was almost back to sleep when I felt the mattress shift. Heat enveloped me and pinned me down.
“Dude. What the hell? Your bed is the top bunk,” I said, feebly pushing Shane away from me. It felt like he was wearing nothing but his boxers.
“I know where mah bed ish,” Shane slurred. He wrapped his arms and legs around me tightly and my body began to react in ways I didn't want him to notice.
“Seriously. Get out, Shane. This isn't your bed.”
“I know,” he replied.
I felt Shane shake his head. “I don't want to,” he said softly. His hands sought my face and when they found it, they pulled me in for a kiss. Light, feathery, shaky. I almost thought I'd imagined it until Shane pressed his lips against mine again. The next kiss was firmer, more confident. And all I could think about was how pathetic I was for melting into a kiss that tasted like cheap beer.
