Their struggle to reach the Victoria River and make it back to civilization becomes an epic journey in a patched up two wheel drive vehicle not suited to the terrain, especially while being harassed by the illegal bird smugglers. With Jenny ill and in need of medical attention, Brian Mitchell is required to call on all his reserves to make the "Trek to the Victoria" and safety.
"The sharp 'crack' came just as we neared the bottom and all of a sudden the engine was roaring, but the vehicle was not going anywhere. I knew immediately that we had broken a front axle.

Their lives are further complicated when forced to live under police protection and when the testimony in court given by Brian Mitchell is subjected to challenging scrutiny by the Queens Counsel leading the Defence Team.
Throughout all these events their respect for each other grows into love which is finally fulfilled despite their geographically widely separated responsibilities in life.
