Toby Toucan's Jungle Jeopardy

Jeff's Environmental series

We first see Toby sitting on a vine deep in the heart of the rainforest looking quite sad and deep in thought.
Toby tells the reader of how his father’s friend Tanno had told him of how his parents became lost in a forest fire the other side of the Purple Mountain.
Tanno tells us that it had been started by humans with huge cutting machines and how the rainforest is under threat of destruction from the human beings.
The story unfolds through the conversation between Toby and Tanno of how the rainforest is being striped of its forests and woodlands and the damage that the human beings are doing to their habitat.
Toby explains about all the different creatures that live in the rainforest and how destroying the forests will leave it barren and lifeless.
He also explains about the need to plant trees as they provide oxygen for all creatures to breathe.
Toby goes on to explain about how there are plants in the rainforest that we are discovering that can be used as medicines and treatments for illnesses.
The story concludes with a family of kind and caring forest people who had been looking after Toby’s parents.
They find Toby and Tanno and on seeing them they release his parents from cages to join Toby and Tanno.
All is happy in the end of the story but it should leave its reader with a quest to learn more about the rainforests and to learn more about what can be done to protect our planet for the future.
This story fits in nicely with government guidelines on raising awareness of environmental issues at primary school key stage level 2 in the UK but should have a global appeal.
This story also lends itself to support and endorsement by such bodies as The Rainforest Alliance and Rainforest Concern.
