The clean white truck pulled up behind her car and stopped. Donna could see the driver through the glare on the windshield. A young one, she thought as she watched him through the glass. He was gathering paperwork and kept looking her over somewhat obviously. She knew that her lacey bra was visible through her thin sweater. She had let it ride up…
She looked over her body – her eyes stung and her sight was bleary, but she should see how her feet had swollen and her skin was blistered and red. Rose grimaced, and felt tears burn at the back of her eyes. Although she had never considered herself particularly beautiful the thought of having Lucifer see her like this shamed her. Not yet about to quit, however, she soothed herself with the memory of his warmth and the gentle heat of his kisses. She imaged their reunion and played out scenes of their love making in her mind. She would get to him, of this there was no question.
Picking herself up, she pushed back the aches she felt with every step. Rose was determined to the point of single-mindedness, and in many way she felt as she did when she was painting: focused in on her target, and not planning to stop until she was done. She had always painted in a frenzy, working from the start to the end of a canvas in one session. There would be no resting here, either. No resting until she was with her Devil.
Looking on into the red-blood sky she could see the shining black tips of his castle, the red rubies the adorned it glistening in the light, blinding all who looked at it. Certain that this was the way to go she trudged on, she kept a careful eye out for demons, and was quick to hide when she saw them approach. Many were already busy – locked in strange acts of perversion or torture, and seemingly disinterested in Rose. Regardless, she took no chances.
The landscapes themselves melted into each other, each a familiar scene. The stones that melted the skin making up a haphazard road into a forest where unknown horrors lay, the living heads of people peering up out the ground of one valley, giving Rose no choice but to walk over them, flinching with every sound of breaking bone and ever touch of ragged skin on bare skull. Her heart ached in this place, it forced her to wonder why Lucifer was so set to rule it. His love and kindness for her were such a contrast to the cruel reality of his kingdom.
“It was a kingdom I was given,” he had reasoned with her once, looking into her eyes with a serious expression...
