Stories for kids from 4 - 11: (Visit flutesandflying squirrels.com - Praise for Shelby F. Squirrel and MORE!)
Shelby is a young flying squirrel, who lives with his mother and twin sister, Darby.
This delightful series of stories takes us through two years, in which he is taught the ways of all flying squirrels, and learns much more in the process.
Shelby hiccups and stutters when he is upset or excited, trouble finds him much too easily and growing up is not what he wants to do.
The forest provides him with several new friends, lots of fun and exciting adventures.
In PART TWO, SHELBY ON THE FARM, he meets and learns about farm animals, among other things.
The stories are loosely related to the realities of wild flying squirrels, but liberal poetic license allows much more to happen.
Shelby F. Squirrel is the perfect introduction to learning more about real flying squirrels, one of nature's very little-known and most amazing creatures.
ELEANOR LAWRIE is a retired musician who loves to write. Shelby F. Squirrel was 'born' when one day a door at the condo building where she lives was left open for just a little too long.....
A little of the first story, SHELBY'S FLYING LESSON:
Shelby F. Squirrel was so excited he was quivering all over! His mother had just him that he was old enough now to go down to the graound with the rest of the family to hunt for fallen nuts. He and his twin sister, Darby, were not babies any more!
"But," his mother had sternly added, "You must never go down to the ground alone! We always go together."
The other thing their mother had told them was what the initial "F" stood for. He and Darby had always wanted to know, but were told they would find out when they were older.
Taking a big breath, she announced, "Shelby Flying Squirrel and Darby Flying Squirrel are your full and proper names, and in a few days you will have your first flying lesson!"
"Oh, no!" cried Shelby. "I'll never be able to do that, I just know it!" and before either of them could stop him he scrambled down the tree and across the grass.
(He is chased by a dog, and runs through an open door into the tall building in front of him, where the super yells at him, a cat pounces at him and he escapes by jumping off the balcony railing. It's magic, he CAN fly!!)
