A Tramp Abroad

Mark Twain first became known as a humorous travel writer in The Innocents Abroad and Roughing It. At the height of his career he returned to the travel genre in A Tramp Abroad, published in 1880. Twain mixes autobiography and fiction, as he details a journey through central and southern Europe taken with his friend Harris (a fictional character created for the book, based on his close friend Joseph Twichell). As the two traverse Germany, the Alps and Italy, Twain, as the narrator, plays the part of the American tourist of the time, with a humorous send-up of Old world customs and culture interspersed with American reminiscences.
