The main characters of the novel are George and Frosso; two young people who met and fell in love under adverse conditions. He was a communist, she was a daughter of a dissident. They lived during the occupation and civil war in the Peloponnese and experienced the after-war inhumanity, absurdity, and the horror of Meligalas in Messinia.

He will follow the crimes committed in the streets and homes of Meligalas immediately after its fall. He will be stunned by the brutal execution of hundreds of innocent people and the desecration of the dead inside the Well. He will feel the pain and the wailing of the mother, the wife, the sister who are obliged to observe the execution of their own kinsmen.
