Asian Development Outlook 2013 Update

Growth in developing Asia is hindered by moderation in the People’s Republic of China and India—the region’s two giants—and by steady but slow recovery in the major industrialized economies that has yet to revitalize exports from the region. As developing Asia has instituted macroeconomic and financial reforms in the decade and a half since the Asian financial crisis, and as many regional economies run current account surpluses and hold large foreign reserves, the region is in a strong position to weather financial markets shocks, in particular from the anticipated tapering of quantitative easing in the United States. This Asian Development Outlook 2013 Update looks at governance in developing Asia. Even as the region energetically closes its income gap with advanced economies, a wide gap in governance remains. Yet governance is key to sustaining development momentum, and improving public service delivery can be an entry point for better governance.
