James Otis Kaler, known under pen name James Otis, was an American journalist and author of children’s literature, published over the 150 books for young readers. “Ruth of Boston” is a children’s novel, first published in 1910. The action takes place during the early years of the North American colonies and the reader learns the story of a twelve-year old girl, met with the difficulties of the first few years of settlement in the New World. In the words of author, the purpose of this series of stories is to show to children, and even those who have already taken up the study of history, the home life of the colonists with whom they meet in their books.
