Long, Broad, and Quickeye


Once upon a time there was an old king. He had a son whom he loved dearly. One day the king said to his son that he wanted him to be married as rapidly as possible. The son said that he didn’t know any women to marry. The old king gave to the son a key and said: ‘Go up the staircase, right up to the top of the tower. Look carefully round you, and then come and tell me which you like best of all that you see.’ The son unlocked the door and saw many young beautiful women. He went through the raw of women and chose the most beautiful. He fell in love with her. He promised that he would marry her. He ran to the king and said that he chose one. His father listened to him full of sorrow, and then he spoke: ‘You made a mistake. This young girl has fallen into the power of a wicked sorcerer, who lives in an iron castle…” What happened next?
