PAST LIFE PROBINGS

“Like many people, I occasionally imagine myself living in some kingdom long ago
and far away, riding on horseback through forests, villages and the mists of time.
These are just pleasant fantasies, but there are those who feel such daydreams might
actually be subconscious recollections of previous lives.
The idea is nothing new. For centuries, devotees of numerous Eastern religions have
believed souls reappear after death in other incarnations. As an increasing number of
Americans adopt a more metaphysical “new age” style of thinking, the idea of
reincarnation is becoming more widely accepted in the western world.
A recent “Past Lives Self-Discovery Workshop,” held in Indian Rocks Beach (Florida),
offered local residents the chance to suspend disbelief and decide for themselves
whether they’ve been on Earth (or elsewhere) before.
I decided to attend, hoping that I might find my daydreams actually were memories of
former lives. At least then I’d know that once - long ago - my life was pretty exciting.
I happily imagined discovering I was once a princess, or a pirate, or a wandering
minstrel in some ancient, romantic land. It never occurred to me I could just as easily
have been a beggar, a leper, or a condemned prisoner.
When I arrived at the oceanfront condo where the workshop was to be held I was
greeted by 10 other eager would-be time travelers. Our instructor, Dr. Jay Polmar,
welcomed us. His relaxed appearance - T-shirt, drawstring pants and no shoes - and
a long list of professional credits, which include a Ph.D. in social psychology, as well
as degrees in philosophy and sociology.
In addition, Dr. Polmar, or “Dr. Jay,” as he prefers to be called, has had extensive
training in psychodetoxificatioon; advanced hypnosis therapy; speed-learning and
memory programs; graphology and graphoanalysis (handwriting analysis); and
psychological counseling. And that’s just in this life.
After reviewing some instructional material and explaining what we were about to
experience, he flipped on a cassette of soothing background music and gently began
to guide us on our journey into self-discovered.
I closed my eyes and drifted into a relaxed state. I could hear Dr. Jay, softly telling us to let go of outer distractions and allow our thoughts to flow, beyond childhood, beyond
birth, back, back ...
Soon. I could see myself spinning into space, to the womb, past the womb, farther and father into - what? I wasn’t sure.
Though I envisioned many fascinating scenes, I couldn’t quite convince myself it was
anything beyond my fertile imagination.
When the first state of regression had ended some of the other members of the group
told Dr. Jay they also felt as though they were just fantasizing, not really experiencing
past lives. He didn’t try to convince us what we were experiencing was reality. In fact,
throughout the workshop Dr. Jay never once told us what to believe - instead he
challenged us to discover what we believed. He also encouraged us to believe in our
own spiritual powers, not his, or anyone else’s.
I supposed I expected him to try to be some kind of guru, .. read more in the course itself.
